Groupon has completely moved out of its long-term Chicago Avenue home, as evidenced by the name change of another local business in the enormous River North office complex that had housed the tech startup.

According to a press statement issued by the company on Tuesday, Echo Global Logistics, a supply chain management and transportation company, remodeled a portion of its space in the former Montgomery Ward catalog building to combine two levels the company previously used into a single, larger collaborative workspace. Where the Groupon name had loomed over the river, new signs bearing Echo's logo were erected on the building's corners.

Pete Rogers, chief financial officer of Echo, said in a statement, "It's a gorgeous building with a wonderful environment and amenities that mix form and function to guarantee our growing team has a place to thrive and continue the Echo success story for years to come.

The 1.65 million square foot facility at 600 W. Chicago Ave. houses offices and other facilities. According to CoStar, a distributor of commercial real estate data, biotech business Tempus, which has two floors with a little over 200,000 square feet and 1,500 employees, is the building's largest tenant, followed by Echo, which employs around 1,100 people and has 185,000 square feet.

In 2005, Echo began as a "single conference room" housed in the same facility, according to a statement from CEO Doug Waggoner. The company currently employs thousands of people nationwide at 30 locations, and it works with 35,000 companies that need to send their goods as well as 50,000 carrier partners that can handle the delivery of goods. Echo processes over 16,000 shipments daily.

Waggoner said in the release, "As one of Chicago's biggest tech employers, it's fitting that our team works hard in a building with the Echo logo on it, visible for the entire city to see."

Echo recently built three new offices in Mexico City, Monterrey, Mexico, and Laredo, Texas, and announced cross-border services there as well.

Groupon spokesperson Mike Tepeli stated in a statement on Tuesday that the business has not occupied its former River North location since the beginning of February.

Groupon relocated its Chicago office, which had been located in River North at 300,000 square feet, to the Loop at 25,000 square feet on the 25th floor of the Leo Burnett building at 35 W. Wacker Drive, early this year. The business terminated its lease at 600 W. Chicago two years early and implemented a number of cost-cutting measures, including hundreds of layoffs, following years of declining income. Its most recent annual report states that as of the end of the previous year, it employed 2,213 people overall, with 393 of them workers based in North America.

Groupon was founded in 2008 and reached its peak employment of over 11,000 people worldwide in 2012. However, since then, the company has suffered a fall in the demand for its online deals business, which prompted it to issue a warning this spring on its capacity to continue as a going concern.

Although revenue was down 7% from the same time in 2022, the company has since rectified its going concern issue and reported positive operating cash flow for the fourth quarter that ended on December 31.

According to the company's most recent earnings report, sales for 2023 was $514.9 million, a 14% decrease from the previous year. The report states that net losses for the year were $52.9 million as opposed to $234.4 million in 2022.
