Unicef and DSV, a worldwide transport and logistics company, established a new cooperation intended to improve global supply chains and enable quick emergency responses.

According to an official announcement, DSV will give Unicef in-kind flights for the quick delivery of vital goods during emergencies as well as flexible finance to enable timely support to children worldwide.

"Unicef supported national vaccination targets and outbreak response in 2023 by delivering 2.79 billion vaccine doses to 105 countries," says Carla Haddad Mardini, Unicef's director of private fundraising and partnerships. Millions of children worldwide, however, were denied access to life-saving vaccinations, highlighting the serious problems with global supply networks, particularly in isolated locations. In order to guarantee the prompt delivery of necessary supplies, this new collaboration with DSV aims to address these vulnerabilities. This will enable us to work toward long-term improvements in the way we provide essential supplies to children in addition to meeting their immediate needs."

According to the release, children suffer the most and immediately during emergencies, increasing their risk of illness and malnourishment. "In addition to offering in-kind flights for emergency deliveries, DSV's flexible funding commitment allows Unicef to mobilise resources swiftly - in as little as 24 hours after a crisis strikes - guaranteeing that supplies reach the children who need them most, no matter how remote their location."

"The world faces ongoing challenges that require effective solutions and support," states Jens H. Lund, Group CEO of DSV. For this reason, in order to guarantee effective humanitarian logistics for regions impacted by crises, we have opted to collaborate with Unicef. The foundation of this strategic cooperation is a pre-established in-kind flight arrangement that makes it possible to provide children and their families with essential goods whenever and wherever they need them. DSV is prepared to assist Unicef in providing life-saving goods to children in need during the first 72 hours of an emergency in order to help them survive and recover."

Bolstering supply networks

In order to increase children's access to basic commodities and services, DSV and Unicef will develop supply chains, with a regional focus on Latin America, by utilizing DSV's industry experience.

"Developing the skills of the supply chain staff is a crucial part of making supply chains stronger. 40% of resources are squandered in the field of global health as a result of inefficiencies that are frequently connected to labor issues. In order to assess and improve important operational and technological facets of supply chain management, including planning and budgeting, transportation, distribution, and storage, as well as end-user monitoring, the collaboration uses the Unicef supply chain maturity model."

The announcement also stated that governments in Latin America will utilize the findings to create evidence-based national plans for upgrading their supply chains, concentrating expenditures to maximize gains in resilience and accessibility to medical goods and services.

The collaboration expands on DSV's earlier engagement with Unicef, which was initiated in 2020 when DSV endorsed the distribution of Covax vaccines and joined the World Economic Forum Supply Chain & Transport Industry Charter. The statement also stated that DSV has contributed to Unicef's humanitarian efforts, most notably following the 2023 earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.
